Travel Experiences In Africa, Ghana

Accra, the capital city of Ghana, is a city full of life and activity. The city has its own rich culture, traditions, and history, making it a very popular tourist destination.

If you are planning a trip to Accra, check out the list below for some of the best places to visit when you are there:

Independence Square
Independence Square is the most recognizable structure in Accra. It is also known as Black Star Square. The square was used for independence celebrations in 1960, and it has since become a tourist attraction. Most tourists come to the square to take a photo with the world’s largest sculpture of an African woman, which stands 62 feet tall. This is just one of the many monuments in the square.

Makola Market
Makola Market is on the main thoroughfare in Accra, and it is the center for market women in Accra. If you want to get an idea of how the local people live, this is the place to go! Anything you can imagine can be found here, from traditional food items like smoked fish and dried yams to old electronic gadgets. One unique thing about Makola Market is that it’s one of the few markets in Accra where you will find men doing women’s jobs such as hairdressing and weaving.

National Museum of Ghana
The museum is located at the north-eastern edge of Accra. It has many interesting displays, including a room full of tribal carvings and a skeleton of the world’s largest snake. There are 11 rooms and some outdoor spaces to show ethnographic objects and natural history displays. The ground floor has ethnographic displays, while the basement is dedicated to natural history. The ground floor displays ethnographic objects, including a large collection of Asante gold weights and pottery, textiles, and beadwork from across Ghana.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is a memorial to Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president. He was also a Pan-Africanist and played an important role in Ghana’s independence from British rule. The park offers fantastic views over Accra and contains several sculptures such as the Black Star Gate, African Unity Monument, Liberation Day Monument, and Independence Arch. It’s also home to great museums such as the Museum of Science and Technology, the National Museum (the National Theatre), W.E.B Du Bois Centre, and Makola Market.

Osu Castle
Osu Castle is a historic site in Accra and one of Ghana’s most popular tourist attractions. Visitors can climb up to the top via spiral staircases to take in views over Accra, including parts of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue, and view galleries that house antique artworks from different communities.
